In a shocking incident, a 14-year-old girl was set ablaze in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. She died on May 11 at the Villupuram Government Medical College and Hospital (VGMCH) at Mundiyambakkam. The Villupuram police have arrested G. Murugan(52) husband of a former councillor, and K. Kaliyaperumal(60) in connection with the incident.
The incident took place at Sirumadurai colony near Thiruvennainallur in the Villupuram district around 11.30 A.M. on May 10. Her father Jayabal owns a small shop in the locality. On Sunday, Murugan had reportedly come to Jayabal’s house to tell him to open his shop in the morning. However, since Jayabal was not in the house, Jayasree refused to open the shop herself and told Murugan to speak to her father. Murugan, who was in an inebriated state, had left the spot in a huff.
The girl’s family has alleged that she was alone at home and looking after the shop in front of their house when the duo reportedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire. Neighbours heard her wails and rushed to her rescue. They immediately poured water and rushed her to the Villupuram Medical College Hospital for treatment,” a police officer said.
The two AIADMK Members was arrested for attacking Jayapal’s uncle eight years ago and was out on bail. The girl’s father admitted that his family has had “the previous enmity” with Murugan.
In her statement to the Magistrate, Jayasree told that it was Murugan and Yasagan alias Kaliyaperumal who had tied her hands, poured petrol on her and set her on fire. Based on her statement, the Villupuram police have arrested Murugan and Kaliyaperumal.
“They are AIADMK members. We are investigating the crime from various angles. Both the men have been arrested. FIR also has been registered,” Villupuram SP Jayakumar told TNM.
According to Stalin, it is the second such crime of burning alive a student by AIADMK members. A bus was set ablaze in Dharmapuri, in which three girl students of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University were burnt alive in 2000.
Stalin urged the police to act impartially and ensure the strictest punishment to the culprits.
