A 63 year old politician from Kerala. Completed her Bachelor’s degree in science from Pazhassi Raja N.S.S College, Mattanur and later did B.Ed from Vishvesvarayya Collegein 1980.
After completing her graduation, she was a high school teacher at Sivapuram. After teaching science for Seven years she retired Voluntarily and got into politics full time. She entered Kerala state politics and later became a member of CPI.
In 1996 Shailaja represented Koothuparamba and Peravoor in 2004. She was the editor of Shailaja Mahila Association’s Shrine Mahila Association. She represented Kootupuramba in 1996 and Peravoor in 2006 in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
Shailaja is now a Minister of Health and Social welfare in the ministry of Pinariya Vijayan. As a Health Minister she is constantly being highly regarded for her constant work ethics and commitments towards her work.
During the Nipah virus outbreak in 2018 she had set up a team and her management skills led her to contain the outbreak with the lowest death toll in the history and across the globe. During this time she went by herself to the villages affected by Nipah virus, spoke to them and consoled them although she was scared.
The experience of the Nipah virus outbreak helped the Health minister flatten Covid-19 in the initial stage. During the initial stages, each district was asked to devote 2 hospitals for Covid-19. While other states were struggling and the infection raised in the country, Kerala state had only 4 deaths and 630 confirmed cases.
The state was taking quick actions and the hospitals had separate entrance and exits. Covid test results would be generated within 48 hours. More than 1 lakh people remained isolated in their homes.
In 2010 K.K. Shailaja has received International attention for her leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic. She was invited to participate in the United National Public Service Day 2020 by the United Nation to be among the Panel discussion. She was also featured for her Corona Warriorship by Vogue Magazine. She is selected as The ‘Top Thinker’ in the world for the British Magazine named ‘Prospect’
She is a live example of being an amazing teacher, a responsible politician, a wife, a mother, and a grandmother to her granddaughter.
