How can one forget the dialogue “Hi, I’m Chitti, the robot, speed 1 terahertz, memory 1 gigabyte” from the blockbuster movie Endhiran. Much before Endhiran, there was Small Wonder-a science fiction drama that many of us grew up watching. Robots entered our lives through television screens made us fall with technology.
Finally, the wait is over! Now you can see robots in Namma Chennai! This time not as a superhero but as a “waiter”
Yes! We are talking about the first Robot themed restaurant in India.
This new restaurant is the talk of the town located in the OMR with a dining capacity of 75 people. Initially named as MOMO, later kick-start with a new name “ROBOT”.
As you walk inside the dimly lit restaurant which has a fluorescent design against a black decor is a team of 7 robots designed in white and blue. These robots are appointed as “Waiters”.A female robot at the reception guides the customers about their table numbers. It is surprising to see that these robots can greet and interact in English and Tamil.
Owned by two friends Venkatesh Rajendran and Karthik Kannan-this restaurant serves Chinese and Thai cuisine. The customer has to place an order on the tablet kept at their table. The chef prepares and hands over it to the robot waiters.

One of the robots, holding a tray of your food says, “your food is ready, take it yourself, have a nice day”, in a low mechanical voice which makes many of us wonder whether they are real robots or a human disguised as robots.
Also, the long magnetic strips on the floor guide the machines around the restaurant. If somebody is blocking their way, these robots will request them to move.
Have a Break.Have a PHOTO
It has a selfie corner for people who want to take selfies with the robots. There is so much fun along with food, especially for the children. The robots are yet to be named, and one can also suggest a name by writing down on a piece of paper.
Although this concept has already started in Japan, China, Europe etc. This is a first of its kind in India.Next time if you visit Chennai, be sure to visit this restaurant!
Gone are the days when the customers had to wait for the attendant to take the order. Apart from the innovative way that the food is being served, everything remains the same as in other hotels. This restaurant has human staff too who are trained in handling the robot in case of any emergency.
Time and money in this restaurant are worth spending. While technology and artificial intelligence continue to develop, one cannot deny the fact that the robots won’t ever fully replace humans in the workplace.
