Lockdown Results Increase In Child Marriage At Nilgiris District

Nilgiris area in Tamil Nadu is seeing an increase in rate of child marriage due to the closure of schools set off by COVID-19 and the organization has so far resulted in five such relationships, Collector Divya said on Thursday.

As schools were closed due to the pandemic, parents and guardians were forcing their young girl children to get married, without thinking about their age, especially in Gudalur and Pandalur zones.

Following up on a hint, the district authorities a week ago halted five such relationships, Divya said and warned of severe lawful actions against those associated with the offense.

Officials have been approached to complete a study to discover the explanations behind such child marriages, with the assistance of NGOs, she said.
