Every single person from this city has deep emotional connection with Marina beach.They grew up playing in this beach, parting with their friends, dating with their girlfriends/boyfriends and spend leisure time with their families.
The world’s second largest beach is also the biggest street food joint in the city.
It caters to various foods from sundals, baji, tea, corn, sandwiches, ice creams and many more food items.
Among all this frenzy, there is one most popular food joint in this avenue – Sundari Akka kadai aka Sundari Fish Shop. Which caters to mouth-watering seafood items.
Located next to Marina swimming pool, the small cartwheeled shop has a large number of visitors which comprises of tourists, students, auto drivers and localities etc.
On weekends you can also find a lot of IT professionals waiting with tokens to get a taste of her delicious foods.
Sundari Akka manages to churn out around 10 – 11 different items daily. Beginning with Prawns, Squids and different varieties of fish. Mostly Vanjaram and Sankara breeds.
Every day she goes to the fish market in Kasimedu fish market and handpicks fresh items required for her cooking. She procures an approx of 100 kgs of sea foods for her daily needs.
Her shop opens at 12 noon and is immediately crowded with tokens to get a taste of the non-vegetarian meal along with varieties of sea foods. She winds up her shop at 3:30 PM and again start it in the evening by 7 PM to 10 PM.
She serves non-vegetarian meals for 100rs per plate. It includes hot rice, sambar, three different types of local fish curry, mutton thala (head) curry and mutton liver chukka.
She also serves an economical set of meals for 50rs per plate which serves hot rice, sambar and some varieties of fish gravy.
In one of her interviews, Sundari Akka says that she learnt the art of masala making from her mother and she hasn’t shared the ingredients to her sons either. Her traditional method of masala making along with the marinating process is the secret of her success.
She started this food joint in the year 2000 and was very popular among the local resident in the beach zone.
In the last couple of years, the Sundari Akka has become the talk of the town with Chennai’s popular YouTube Channels, video bloggers, food reviewers such as Madras Central, Dan Jr blogs, Irfan’s view and etc have visited her and posted her videos on YouTube.
She says that social media has propelled her popularity to many places across the city and her social media presence has gained quick prominence across among the food-loving Chennai public.
Despite all her success, Sundari Akka has no big dreams of opening up a big restaurant and remains modest enough and says that she is happy serving the people who come searching for a good plate of meal.
